Swift garnered five nominations for the short film at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on August 28, 2022,[7] and won three of them.[8] In her acceptance speech for the Video of the Year award, she announced a "brand-new" studio album scheduled for release on October 21, 2022.[9] Shortly after, Swift's official website was updated with a clock counting down to midnight and the phrase "Meet me at midnight".[9] The canvases of some of Swift's songs on Spotify were changed to a visual featuring the clock.[10] At midnight, Swift posted across her social media accounts that her tenth studio album would be titled Midnights, accompanied by a premise. She described the album as "the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout [her] life".[9] Swift's official website crashed due to heavy traffic following the posts.[11]

Taylor Swift surprised fans Thursday with news that four previously unreleased songs will drop at midnight, on the eve of her "Eras" tour. And if that's not worth staying up past bedtime for, we don't know what is.

Swift announced the arrival of new music at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards during her acceptance speech for Video of the Year.[3] Swift also mentioned that more information would be available at midnight.

Swift shared this revelation at the stroke of, well, midnight on Sept. 21 in a new TikTok series called "Midnights Mayhem With Me." While the artist will forever and always be known as the queen of Easter eggs, she wanted to use this series as a way to directly share information about Midnights with her fans.

To go right along with the name of her new album, Taylor Swift's tenth studio album, Midnights, will release at midnight Eastern Time (ET) on Friday, October 21, 2022. Fans can now pre-save the tracks on Spotify and Apple Music so that they'll be ready to listen to them once the album drops on Friday.

Soon after, Swift posted the first Midnights images(Opens in a new tab) to her Instagram, including the full album art, number of tracks, and release date (no hiding it here). The caption to the post read, "Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at midnight." She followed up with several TikToks introducing fans to exclusive vinyl(Opens in a new tab) and album art, and weeks later, Swift finally made it back into the social media moment with a "Making of Midnights" video(Opens in a new tab) posted on Sept. 16. It stoked fan theories across TikTok and Twitter, and (unsurprisingly) held some album clues as well. What a lovely snowy beach!

Ahlgrim: "He was sunshine, I was midnight rain" is just so corny. "Midnight Rain" is a corny combination of words on its own, but I expected a seasoned songwriter like Swift to serve a double entendre, or some kind of layered metaphor. Alas, the phrase is presented on its face, used exactly how it sounds.

This marks a stark contrast to the aforementioned "Lavender Haze," making it unlikely that "Maroon" was inspired by her current relationship. Instead, odds are that Swift penned this track recalling feelings of past heartbreaks during a sleepless midnight.

Years later, she occasionally finds herself plagued with the unknowingness of if she made the right choice. "Sometimes we all get / Some kind of haunted," Swift reflects. "And I never think of him / Except for midnights like this."
